Roza Shanina | Timeline

Roza Georgiyevna Shanina (3 April 1924 – 28 January 1945) was a Soviet sniper during World War II who was credited with fifty-nine confirmed kills, including twelve soldiers during the Battle of Vilnius. Shanina volunteered for the military after the death of her brother in 1941 and chose to be a marksman on the front line. Praised for her shooting accuracy, Shanina was capable of precisely hitting enemy personnel and making doublets (two target hits by two rounds fired in quick succession). (Intro from Wikipedia)

April 23, 1924 - Yedma, Arkhangelsk Oblast, Soviet Union - Roza Georgiyevna Shanina is born in a family of 9 children (3 adopted)
January(?) 1(?), 1938 - Arkhangelsk - Shanina walks 200 km across the Taiga to the rail station and travels to Arkhangelsk to study at the College there. Becomes a member of the Soviet youth movement Komsomol
June(?) 1(?), 1941 - Arkhangelsk - Shanina graduates from the University of Arkhangelsk
September 11, 1941 - Arkhangelsk - Shanina takes a job in kindergarten No.2, with which she was offered a free apartment
December 1(?), 1941 - Arkhangelsk - Shanina receives a death notification for her brother Mikhail, killed in the siege of Leningrad
June(?) 1(?), 1942 - Arkhangelsk - Shanina doesn't enlist immediatly. Spends a year studying at the Arkhangelsk Pedagogical Institute, while learning to shoot by herself
June 22, 1943 - Moscow - Shanina is accepted into the Vsevobuch program for univeral military training =(START)
April 2, 1944 - Between Vitebsk and Smolensk - After graduating with honors, Shanina joins the 184th Rifle Division and appointed a commander of a female sniper platoon - Starting point for the new 3rd Belorrussian Front
April 5, 1944 - SE of Vitebsk - Shanina kills her first german soldier and is shocked about it. Her comrades give her the support to continue
April 9, 1944 - Roza Shanina's portrait is featured on the front page of the soviet newspaper "Unichtozhim Vraga"
April 17, 1944 - Kozyi Gory, Smolensk Oblast - For her actions in the battle of Kozyi Gory, Shanina is awarded the Order of Glory, 3rd class
June 22, 1944 - Vitebsk Region - Operation Bagration starts - Shanina goes to the front line although her request to do so is refused

June 26, 1944 - near Vitebsk - Shanina participates in the elimination of the encircled german troops near Vitebsk (until 28th)
July 8, 1944 - Vilnius - Shanina takes part in the Battle for Vilnius
July 13, 1944 - Vilnius - The germans are driven out from Vilnius
July 16(?), 1944 - Sberski, 20km W of Slabadai, Lithuania/East Prussia - Shanina and comrades reach the river Shoshopo
August 31, 1944 - E of East Prussia - At this point, Shanina had 42 confirmed kills
September 16, 1944 - E of East Prussia - Shanina is awarded the Order of Glory 2nd Class for bravery and intrepidity in battle
September 17, 1944 - The "Unichtozhim Vraga" credits Shanina with 51 kills
October 6, 1944 - Bryansk Forest - Shanina starts writing a diary. Looking for her surviving brother, who was caught drinking away from the front
October 17, 1944 - Naumiestis, Lithuania - Combats with Germans
October 26, 1944 - Pillkallen, near Schlossberg (Dobrovolsk) - Shanina witnesses the death of Captain Igor aseyev - Hero of the Soviet Union - next to her.
October 27, 1944 - Pillkallen, near Schlossberg (Dobrovolsk) - Shanina receives the Medal of Courage for actions in battle near Schlossberg on 26th
December 2, 1944 - near Vitebsk - Rest in safe zone far from the frontline
December 12, 1944 - Pillkallen, near Schlossberg (Dobrovolsk)? - A german sniper hits her in the shoulder leaving incapacitated for some days
January 8, 1945 - near Vitebsk(?) - Nikolai Krylov alloes Shanina to participate in front-line combat (59 confirmed Kills)
January 14, 1945 - near Lithuania and Belarus - Shanina starts moving to the front
January 15, 1945 - Etkunen/Eydtkuhnen (Chernyshevskoye) - frontier - Shanina reaches the town of Eydtkuhnen (Chernyshevskoye), where she uses white camouflage
January 17, 1945 - East Prussia - Gusev Area? - Shanina writes in her diary that her battalion lost 72 out of 78 soldiers, and that she felt she could be on the verge of being killed
January 24, 1945 - East Prussia - Wolodino Area? - German fire is so intense that Shanina and comrades seek shelter inside self-propelled guns
January 27, 1945 - Richau, East Prussia (Tscherepanowo, near Nowo-Bobruisk) - Shanina was severely injured while shielding a wounded artillery officer. She was found by two soldiers disemboweled, with her chest torn open by a shell fragment
January 28, 1945 - Richau, East Prussia - Despite attempts to save her, Roza Shanina dies, aged 20 =(END)
