Éric Tabarly | Timeline

Éric Marcel Guy Tabarly
(24 July 1931 – 13 June 1998) was a yachtsman and French Navy officer. Member of the Yacht Club de France, he was regarded by many of his peers as one of the best offshore sailors if not the best ever, and he inspired more than a generation of French sailors to follow in his wake. In 1998 while sailing to Scotland, he was hit during the night by the gaff and knocked overboard, drowning in the Irish Sea.

April 23, 1989 - Lorient, France - Takes part in the two handed "Transat en Double", a two handed race from Lorient, round Bermuda and Back to France without stopping. His boat was the new generation "Bottin Enterprise"
May 7, 1989 - St.Barthélèmy, Antilles - Tabarly reaches St.Barthélèmy in 2nd place
May 16, 1989 - St.Barthélèmy - Sails for the second leg of the race, back to Lorient
May 21, 1989 - 400 miles West of the Azores - During the outward leg, while leading the race on the way home, they capsize. Tabarly is thrown out and fractures his collar bone. He manages to swim back to the upturned hull and climb back on board. He is picked up by a panamanian freighter 6 hours later
July 19, 1989 - While in La Trinité-sur-Mer(?) - "Pen Duick" is restored is presented at the Fêtes de la Liberté in Rouen
