Henri Toivonen | Timeline

Henri Pauli Toivonen
(25 August 1956 - 2 May 1986) was a Finnish rally driver born in Jyväskylä, the home of Rally Finland. His father Pauli Toivonen was a well-known and very successful rally driver in the 1960s. He was a rising star, a raw talent and in the last year of his career, a clearly faster racing driver than his competitors. He was also the youngest driver to win a rally with 24 years old. His future looked very bright. Toivonen tried the race tracks, having tested Formula 3 and Formula 1 cars, and alegedly making such a fast lap at Estoril that he would start a Formula 1 race in 6th place on the grid line...in his Lancia Delta S4! But his passion was in racing rallies.Toivonen, along with his american co-pilot Sergio Cresto, died in the "Tour de Corse" in May 1986 when their Lancia Delta S4 derailed and caught fire. Group B rally cars, which were the fastest, most powerful, high-tech in the world, saw a string of accidents culminating with the decision to ban the category altogether after Toivonen's death.
