Max Valentiner | Timeline

Captain Christian August Max Ahlmann Valentiner (December 15, 1883 – July 19, 1949) was a German U-boat commanderduring World War I. He was the third highest-scoring U-boat commander of the war, and was awarded the Pour le Mérite for his achievements.
He was also branded a war criminal by the Allies, for killing hundreds of civilians by sinking the passenger liner Persia without warning on December 30, 1915, contrary to international law. (Intro from Wikipedia)


December 15, 1883 - Tondern, Prussia - Christian August Max Ahlmann Valentiner is born
April 1, 1902 - Swinemünde - Max joins the Kaiserliche Marine as a "Seekadett" on the school ship "Moltke"
August 15, 1902 - Swinemünde - Max receives the Rettungsmedaille (life-saving medal) for saving a ship's boy from drowing in Swinemünde's harbor
January(?) 1(?), 1903 - Kiel - Max joins the Emperial Naval School at Kiel, attending courses on diving, mostly. Ends his training aboard the "SMS Hansa"
May 14, 1903 - Heligoland - Max saves the life of another colleague in Heligoland Harbour and is awarded the "Order of the Crown Medal"
September 29, 1905 - Kiel - Valentiner is promoted to "Leutnant zur See"
January(?) 1(?), 1907 - Kiel - Valentiner becomes an officer on "SMS Braunschweig"
March 30, 1908 - Kiel - Promoted to "Oberleutnant zur See". Valentiner becomes commander of "1.Matrosen-Artillerie-Ableitung"
January(?) 1(?), 1911 - Kiel - Valentiner becomes officer of the u-boat salvage ship "SMS Vulkan"
January 17, 1911 - Kiel - Valentiner saves all 30 men of U-3 by getting them out via a torpedo tube after it sank in Kiel Harbour due to  an unclosed valve in the ventilation shaft. Among the saved crew was Otto Weddigen, later commander of U-9. Valentiner receives the Order of the Crown 4th Class =(START)
July 1, 1911 - Kiel - Valentiner takes command of the new U-boat "U-10". On board he shows incredible skill and boldness and on training manoeuvres he sinks several ships with drill torpedoes without ever being sighted. His performance literally changes the German vision of U-boat warfare
March 22, 1914 - Kiel - Valentiner is promoted to Kapitänleutnant
March 31, 1914 - Kiel - Becomes a teacher at the U-boat school in Kiel
August 4, 1914 - Kiel - Valentiner receives the command of the "U-3", the u-boat on which he saved 30 lives in 1911
August 17, 1914 - Kiel - Orders to sinks russian ships in the Baltic Sea
October 27, 1914 - Kiel - Valentiner is relieved from his command due to insucess. He blames it on the U-3's poor capabilities (Actually the area of operations, in "lithuanian" waters, was heavily mined and it was extremely difficult to maneuver)
October(?) 30(?), 1914 - Berlin - Valentiner sent to Prince Heinrich for explanations. The furious Prince sends him away
December 5, 1914 - Kiel - Valentiner is assigned to the 2.U-Flottille Pola, base at the austrian base of Cattaro. He is surprised to know that he would take command of the new U-boat "U38"
December 15, 1914 - Kiel - U-38 is commissioned under Max Valentiner's command. HE personally chooses his officers from the U-boat School, however, problems with the U-38's diesel engines are detected from the start
