Pavel Gudz | Timeline

Pavel Gudz (September 28, 1919 – May 5, 2008) was a soviet KV-1 tank commander and holder of the Order of Lenin during World War II, credited with 18(+) enemy tanks and 10(+) anti-tank guns destroyed.

September 28, 1919 - Stufchentsy Proskurovsky, Kamyanets-Podilskiy Region, Soviet Union - Pavel Gudz is born
January(?) 1(?), 1934 - Kamyanets-Podilskiy(?) - Pavel leaves Primary school and goes to study literature in secondary school
January(?) 1(?), 1937 - Kamyanets-Podilskiy(?) - After graduating at the Technical Arts School, Gudz is appointed intructor at the District Department of Public Education
September 1, 1939 - Saratov - Gudz enters Saratov Heavy Tank School - begins training with T-35 and KV-1 Heavy tanks
June 10, 1941 - Saratov - Graduates from Saratov Heavy Tank School as lieutenant =(START)
June 12, 1941 - Lvov, Kiev military District - Assigned to the 32nd Tank Division
June 22, 1941 - W of Lvov - Gudz checks between Lvov and the new frontier, as war starts
June 23, 1941 - Lvov - Gudz and his platoon destroy 8 tanks, 1 gun, 3 armoured cars, several cars (4 total)
June 24, 1941 - SW of Rivne/Rovno - Holds position and then retreats closer to Kiev to escape the battle of Dubno
June(?), 27(?), 1941 - Kiev Military District - Posted as platoon leader to the 1st battalion/63rd tank regiment in the 4th mechanized corps
June 30(?), 1941 - W of Kiev(?) - His battalion misses the disastrous battle of Dubno
July 1(?), 1941 - South of Kiev - Gudz gets involved in the fighting south of Kiev

July 27, 1941 - E of Kiev - Misses encirclement in the Kiev Pocket. The Battalion is forced to burn their tanks
August 1(?), 1941 - Moscow - Gudz's battalion is dissolved and he is sent to Moscow to form other unit
September 1(?), 1941 - near Volokolamsk - Assigned to reinforce Rokossovsky's 16th army near Volokolamsk
November 25(?), 1941 - Krasnaya Polyana-Kryukovo-Istra - Soviets manage to hold the line
December 5, 1941 - During soviet counteroffensive, Gudz lone KV-1 attacks a german held village - During a three-hour fight, Gudz KV-1 is hit 29 times but not penetrated, while he manages to knock out four PaK guns
December 7(?), 1941 - Gudz is awarded the Order of Lenin after the action of 5/12
January(?) 1(?), 1942 - Gudz is appointed deputy commander of the 89th separate tank battalion
June(?) 1(?), 1942 - around Vyazma - Gudz involved in numerous actions around Vyazma against PaK guns (since 12/1941)
July 1(?), 1942 - Gudz is promoted to Major
November 19, 1942 - NNW of Stalingrad - Commands the 8th Guards Heavy Tank regiment during operation Uranus
November 30(?), 1942 - NNW of Stalingrad - Gudz is badly wounded during the reduction of the stalingrad pocket
May 1(?), 1943 - Returns to action, as deputy commander of the 5th guards heavy tank regiment
September(?) 1(?), 1943 - after Kursk - Promoted to Podpolkovnik
October(?) 1(?), 1943 - Zaporozhye - Looses a hand in combat after his KV-1 is knocked out. Gudz has his left collarbone broken and a completely crushed left-wrist, which he had to cut with a knife to be able to get out of his KV-1 in flames. He passes out
April 1(?), 1944 - With a prosthetic hand, returns to his unit while it is converting to the IS-1 (IS-85)
May 1(?), 1944 - Moscow - Because of his fragile health, Gudz is sent to the staff of the Military Academy
January(?) 1(?), 1947 - Moscow - Graduates from the Military Academy with a Golden Medal

September 29, 1954 - Semipatalinsk, Kazakhstan - Participates in the first above-ground nuclear tests
October 30, 1954 - Semipatalinsk, Kazakhstan - Participates in the first above-ground nuclear tests - Last test
January(?) 1(?), 1955 - Moscow - Back in Moscow
October 24(?), 1981 - Washington D.C. - Pavel Gudz travels to Washington for a conference of World War II veterans who participated in the liberation of Nazi concentration camps
November 1(?), 1981 - Moscow - Gudz returns to Moscow
January(?) 1(?), 1989 - Moscow - Pavel Gudz retires, after 50 years service
May 5, 2008 - Moscow - Pave Gudz dies, aged 88 =(END)
