Hans Staden (1525 – 1576) was a german landknecht (mercenary gunner) who voyaged to Brazil in the sixteenth century. While serving in a portuguese fort, he was captured by Tupinambá indians of Brazil. Differently from other less fortunate europeans, Staden survived and managed to return to Europe, publishing an account of his travel and time as a captive. He was the first european to witness and discribe by words and drawings, the cannibalism habits of the Tupinambá people.

October 31, 1554 - Rio de Janeiro - Hans Staden is rescued by Guillaume Moner, Captain of the "Catherine de Vetteville". At the time, the french and the portuguese were engaged in a war at Rio de Janeiro, and the Tupinambás were allied with the french. The rescue was accomplished when the captain convinced the natives that Staden wasn't portuguese.
